Sunday, August 8, 2010

You might be wondering why i am blogging about Chinese Ghost Festival, as my title indicate fengshui savvy. There is a connection between these 2 as they are both Chinese Culture and traditions which has passed down from generations to generations. This is the reason that i am sharing throughout the whole month on the Do's and Don'ts (Taboos) for this special month. Do stay tuned.

Let's Begin...

What is this Ghost Festival?

The Ghost Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month. A solemn holiday, the Ghost Festival represents the connections between the living and the dead, earth and heaven, body and soul.

The entire seventh month of the Chinese calendar is called the Ghost Month, a month in which ghosts and spirits are believed to emerge out from the lower world to visit earth.

What are the activities during the month?

They include preparing ritual offerings of food, and burning ghost money (or paper money) to please the visiting ghosts and spirits as well as deities and ancestors. Other activities include burying and releasing miniature paper boats and lanterns on water, which signifies "giving directions to the lost ghosts."

You can also see various forms of tentage set up in open fields during this period, for the Chinese also believe in entertaining the spirits with boisterous live wayang and getai performances not only depicting tales of the divine gods and goddesses, but also bawdy stand-up comedy with a local twang, song and dance numbers in the various Chinese dialects and even sensually acrobatic pole dancing by felinely lithe spandex clad dancers.
